OpenAI Study Reveals How AI is Changing Everyday Life
OpenAI’s latest research delves into billions of conversations to reveal how ChatGPT has quickly become a staple for millions around the world, not just in offices but in homes, classrooms, and personal life. Drawing strictly from user data between late 2022 and mid-2025, analysts tracked dramatic growth in both professional and non-work usage. By July 2025, nearly 10 percent of all adults globally had used ChatGPT, with adoption accelerating fastest in lower-income countries and among women.
While many imagined ChatGPT as a tool for programmers and tech experts, the study finds the opposite: writing and practical guidance tasks dominate, ranging from essays and emails to decision-making for everyday problems. Professional use remains strong—especially for educated workers—but personal topics now make up over 70 percent of all activity. Requests for creative writing and code are far less common than popular narratives suggest.
Most conversations fall into three categories: practical advice, information-seeking, and digital content creation, with each showing steep year-on-year growth. Rather than simply searching for facts, users are turning to the chatbot for support with workplace projects and daily life challenges. The economic findings point to significant productivity gains across knowledge-intensive fields, as users lean on ChatGPT for reliable content and useful guidance rather than passive information or entertainment.
OpenAI’s major study highlights a clear shift: ChatGPT is reshaping how people solve problems, express themselves, and carry out work—making artificial intelligence not just a background tool, but part of everyday decision making and communication.
